What are the Beatitudes?

The Beatitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5, verses 3-12. They show us the values of Jesus.

Both religion and our society have often been caught addressing the problem of economic inequality by calling the rich God’s favorite. Isn’t it obvious, one might argue? On the other hand we can so easily be tempted to blame the poor for being poor. One must have done something wrong to be crushed on the bottom of the heap.  The Beatitudes reverse that trend and call the poor God’s favorites. The Gospel questions the wisdom of the world altogether. Not to mention requiring a great deal of religious imagination.  (from This Sunday’s Scripture

The Beatitudes turn the values important to the world upside down. They challenge us to side with the poor and needy.  They challenge public policies that call for the elimination of child support subsidies that enable the poor to go to work. Or the proposed new budget from Washington that wants to cut programs that help subsidize housing for the working poor. The Beatitudes challenge us to question whether our own values align with those of Jesus.

The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
B
lessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.
B
lessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
B
lessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the reign of God.
